Testing is a profession, not a trick that can be passed on. We therefore do not view testing as proof that something works after the testing activities have been completed.

Testers do not prove that a product “works”; they investigate threats to its value. Testing is comparable to investigative journalism or the work of a doctor. A doctor has a patient who tells them where it hurts. Software doesn’t tell you that. Testers must first identify the symptoms themselves and then zero in on the most serious issues as early as possible—and that is exactly what we do. Testing does not guarantee quality; rather, it determines when quality is good enough for the stakeholders.
